OUTCOME 04
Transformational Impact Monitoring & Business Systems for Participants
Founders come to Level with impact already embedded into the DNA of their businesses. They are caring for community, sourcing and producing responsibly, and generally making a positive impact in their communities. Often, they just need support to develop systems that track impact and improve efficiency so they can expand upon their good work. Level provides resources and tools for companies to build upon their impactful foundations as they grow and develop.

PALABRERÍA: A COMMUNICATIONS CONSULTING FIRM BASED IN PUERTO RICO
LOCATED: SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO
LEVEL COHORT: 2023
CERTIFIED B CORP SINCE: 2024
B IMPACT SCORE: 102.7
Dayani Centeno-Torres and her business partner Lisa Zayas developed Palabrería to help community-based and social justice organizations elevate their communications strategies and increase their impact. Rooted deeply in investing in community and partnering with local organizations, Palabrería initially thought B Corp Certification was out of reach.
“We considered the B Corp Certification as something for bigger organizations — we are a very small firm,” Centeno-Torres recalls. But participating in the Level program changed that perspective. The company achieved B Corp Certification at the beginning of 2024, becoming the third company in Puerto Rico to do so. As the B Corp community grows on the island, Centeno-Torres hopes to partner with other companies to launch a B Local and help expand the network further.
Going through the certification process helped Palabrería identify opportunities to improve internal business systems. They implemented new time-tracking systems for invoicing contractors, developed a more sophisticated method to track volunteer hours, and formalized a local supplier policy to replace a previous informal approach. “The new system makes contractors feel like they are part of a committed community, and they are proud to be associated with us,” says Centeno-Torres.
One of the biggest challenges Palabrería faced during the B Impact Assessment was expressing their impact clearly within the questionnaire’s framework. “Usually, our impact is integrated into the work because of who we work with,” Centeno-Torres explains. “For example, supporting Puerto Rico’s Midwife Association with their communications efforts carries intrinsic impact because of what they do. That’s how we envision our impact.”
The Level program broadened their understanding of how to apply these values in new ways. “We gained awareness on how impact can also be created with for-profit companies,” Centeno-Torres says. “Before, we were very engaged with nonprofits, and businesses weren’t really on our radar. But they are key players in creating a just society, too.” Engaging with other businesses committed to social change helped Palabrería open a new branch of business, working with for-profit clients who share their mission and values. This shift also made it easier to articulate their impact both in certification and in conversations with partners.
“The B Corp Certification process was like holding up a mirror to our business; it helped us see where we were doing well and where we needed to grow. It pushed us to formalize many of the values we already held, especially around HR and internal systems. We expanded employee benefits, implemented clearer onboarding and review processes, and re-evaluated our supplier relationships to ensure stronger alignment with our sustainability and equity values.”
