OUTCOME 03
Improved Sense of Inclusion & Belonging for Participants
A seat at the table is just the first step of being meaningfully included in any community. For entrepreneurs facing steep barriers to inclusion, it’s crucial not just to be included but to feel a sense of belonging and ownership. Level programming strives to help participants foster connection and build community with other cohort members and the wider B Corp community so that they truly belong and help guide the movement forward.

Green Heffa Farms
“I wanted more farmers B Corp certified so more acres could be stewarded regeneratively and organically. And I wanted to see more businesses run by women especially Black women.”

LEVEL COHORT: 2021
CERTIFIED B CORP SINCE: 2021
B IMPACT SCORE: 98.2
When Farmer Cee walks into a room, she’s carrying more than her title as CEO of Green Heffa Farms. She’s bringing the story of the first—and still only—Black-owned farm to earn B Corp Certification, and she’s using it to open doors that might otherwise stay closed. “Just being a B Corp isn’t enough,” she says. “You also have to eliminate all the excuses for why they might not want you in the room. For me, certification has been a tool for access and protection.”
That access has taken her from her North Carolina farm to the headquarters of global brands committed to regenerative agriculture. One of her earliest collaborations was with Gaia Herbs, which provided a grant to build Green Heffa Farms’ first greenhouse. From there, the partnership blossomed into a two-year fellowship of knowledge exchange, bringing 16 agriculturalists to Gaia’s facilities to learn about regenerative practices, employee systems, and lab operations. Cee, in turn, helped Gaia make its supply chain more inclusive by connecting them with underrepresented farmers.
Most recently, her work led her across the Atlantic to Parma, Italy, home of beauty brand and fellow B Corp Davines. Partnering with the Rodale Institute, Davines built the Rodale Institute European Regenerative Organic Center, a regenerative organic center dedicated to soil health. They named Cee their inaugural “Good Farmer” for the United States, inviting her to spend time with soil scientist Dario Fornara.“What struck me most,” she says, “was how two seemingly different people from different countries and different worlds—beauty and farming—are deeply connected through a common thread: the soil.”
While pursuing B Corp Certification in 2021, Farmer Cee challenged B Lab to consider the unique barriers faced by women- and BIPOC-led businesses. Her candid conversations with B Lab’s team helped shape and launch the Level program. As a part of the inaugural five-member cohort, she aimed to bring more farmers into the B Corp community. “My goal was to get more farmers B Corp certified so more acres could be stewarded regeneratively and organically, more farmworkers could be treated better, and more women—especially Black women—could run thriving businesses,” said Cee.
For Cee, partnerships like those with Gaia and Davines are about opportunity and alignment. “While we’re small, I’m as protective of my brand as a larger company,” she says. “If you don’t have good practices, I don’t want Green Heffa Farms tied to you.”It also resonates with customers. “There are people who only purchase from B Corps,” she says. “It helped with reception and recognition. People know what we stand for before we even say a word.”
“The most meaningful part of Level was seeing myself as a business owner and founder in a bigger community. First as a reporter and later as a consultant, the work always felt like a personal commitment before Level. Now it's not just my personal values or commitment, it's being part of a community that is engaged with this vision of the world and converting that into a standard of practice for our company. I always saw myself as an activist, not as a business owner. Now I say I'm the founder of Palabrería and I'm taking responsibility for my role as a business leader.”
TOBY Agency
“We are trying to put our people on the map in places we can make an impact. That’s why I took the role with B Local Illinois so I have access to companies thinking about their JEDI and impact.”

LOCATED: CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, USA
LEVEL COHORT: 2023
CERTIFIED B CORP SINCE: 2024
B IMPACT SCORE: 89.7
When Natika Washington founded TOBY Agency, she brought a career dedicated to impact, including serving in the Obama administration at the U.S. Department of State and working in the nonprofit sector before earning her MBA. Her vision for TOBY was rooted in supporting women-owned businesses with the resources, networks, and opportunities they need to thrive, especially those traditionally excluded from leadership and decision-making spaces.
Still, Washington had never heard of the B Corp Certification before 2021. “My world was in impact and sustainability, but the B Corp community wasn’t even on my radar,” she recalls. That changed when she was introduced to the movement and encouraged to apply for the Level program. “Had it not been for Level, I wouldn’t be a B Corp. I wouldn’t have even known about it,” she says.
Participating in Level in 2023 connected Washington to a network of mission-driven businesses and provided discounted consulting support to guide TOBY Agency through certification, which they achieved in 2023. Just as importantly, it plugged her directly into the B Local Illinois community, where she quickly took on a leadership role as JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) Chair.
Washington now uses this platform to champion initiatives that connect B Corps with timely and relevant equity topics. In 2024, B Local Illinois launched a Second Chance Employment series to raise awareness among business leaders about hiring individuals with criminal records, highlighting both the social and economic benefits of inclusive hiring. The conversations drew interest from employers eager to contribute space, resources, and funding to continue the work.
She is now planning to launch a women’s series to engage B-curious companies in conversations about supporting women in middle management as they move into leadership and C-suite roles. Washington continually makes it a priority to introduce BIPOC-owned businesses to the B Corp community, often directing them toward the Level program for tailored support.
For Washington, the B Local Illinois network has become both a professional and personal home base. “I was intentionally using the B Corp infrastructure — the BIPOC Slack, B Local events — as my market to see which consultants and companies I could partner with for large-scale contracts,” she says. “It’s about putting our people on the map in places where we can make an impact.”
“Working with this Level group has given me great confidence in becoming a B Corp certified company: I learned what it means to bring value both socially and environmentally through my business, it helped me implement social and environmental measures that I may not have done without it, and it gave me a community I feel like I belong to and can be proud to be a part of.”
