OUTCOME 01

Thriving, Connected, Resilient Businesses

Women entrepreneurs from historically marginalized backgrounds face significant barriers to accessing capital and entrepreneurship opportunities. The Level Program provides entrepreneurs running purpose-driven businesses with targeted support intended to address some of these barriers. The program aims to expand participants’ access to new markets and capital, and ultimately foster a thriving community of resilient businesses that provide quality jobs.

Kula Foods was founded with a vision to introduce African and Caribbean plant-based foods to the market. Born in Kenya and raised in Toronto, when founder Asha Wheeldon moved to Vancouver, she had a hard time finding food and community that nourished her. She founded Kula Foods in 2018 to provide nourishing food to people with dietary restrictions and to share some of her home and heritage with her new community. Asha participated in the Level program in 2023. “We wanted to understand what improvements we can make, not necessarily get certified right away,” she shared. “The most important thing was to ensure we are aligning with our mission.” Kula Foods became a certified B Corp in 2024, and the certification helped facilitate the company’s growth and expansion. “When we decided to launch in the U.S., it helped to be in B Corp. Our first US distribution partner, KeHE, is a B Corp, and our first retailer, Erewhon, is also B Corp certified. We’re also launching in Portland with another B Corp retailer, New Seasons Market,” said Asha, also sharing that she first connected with the Portland-based retailer at Champion’s Retreat.

Alesha Hartley connected Wheeldon with a KeHE buyer, who offered guidance and support so Kula Foods would be prepared to pitch to KeHE and Erewhon. Together they reviewed sale sheets and other business documentation, practiced her pitch, and made sure she felt ready. Joining the B Corp community helped Wheeldon connect with industry partners interested in her business. “I think this is why we were able to land distribution in the U.S. market,” she says.

Aside from new business partnerships, Asha and her team have also forged new nonprofit partnerships since Level. In early 2024, Kula Foods and veritree became partners to plant mangrove trees in Kenya, Asha’s home country, with 1 tree planted after each online order placed. They are collaborating with Flavours of Hope, a cooperative kitchen that provides free culinary space to newcomer immigrant and refugee women to explore cooking, storytelling, and entrepreneurship. Kula is one of the members, and Asha is mentoring women participating in the program. They also recently formalized a new partnership with a local organization that works to expand food access with a focus on culturally relevant foods. Kula is contributing products and food to the organization and exploring ways to further serve the community in the future. “We hope to grow these partnerships as our business grows,” she says. “We have to start somewhere with these dreams. Being in Level helped inspire us to imagine what else we can do and be as a company.”

In 2018, after a personal health journey transformed her relationship with wellness, Ashley Donaldson founded More Life Liquid, a beverage company rooted in community impact. From the beginning, her focus was clear: work closely with BIPOC communities to build bridges to wellness. When she discovered the Level program, she already knew the B Corp logo from product packaging. “Once I started diving into Level and the content, I knew it was what we stand for,” Ashley said. “I wanted to be part of a community that supported that.”

Level became her first real introduction to building a Certified B Corp business. Along the way, it helped her sharpen her vision, connect with mission-aligned partners, and deepen her company’s impact. “This was my first CPG,” she says. “The program gave us a clearer focus, and from that, we’ve gained new partnerships with local wellness spaces, increased local distribution, and been able to hire more people.”

One of the most powerful shifts to come from Ashley’s Level experience was a new approach to hiring—one that put her company’s values at the center. More Life Liquid began partnering with recovery homes for women, offering fair-wage employment to women recovering from trauma and supporting their reintegration into the workforce. Today, women in recovery make up 50% of the company’s team.

“My day job is as a director for women in recovery,” she says. “So bringing that mission into More Life Liquid just made sense. Now, employment is not just about filling roles—it’s about creating opportunities for healing and stability.” The inspiration for this model came partly from connecting with other impact-driven businesses through Level. During the program, Ashley connected with Rhino Foods, which runs its own innovative employment program, and as a result was able to implement a fair chance hiring program for More Life Liquid.

Ashley’s journey didn’t end with her Level cohort. Alesha Hartley recommended her for the 2024-25 BMO Fellowship through the Watson Institute, a program for sustainability-focused entrepreneurs, which offers entrepreneurial training, community feedback, and a broad mentor network. “Level made me ready for that,” Ashley says. “It took me to even more understanding and clarity, and it helped develop the business further.”
